Grade 6 Aboriginal Games Day at Glen Orchard Public School
April 13, 2015
As part of our Aboriginal studies unit, we used our outdoor survival and game creation experiences from Yearley and research into historic Native Games from all across Canada, to create a fun learning experience for our entire school! Students were divided into den teams, partnering older students with younger students, and rotated from event to event. The games represented the Inuit and many different groups across Canada: High Kick, Shrinking Iceberg, Lacrosse, Portage relay, Dox-en-eye and Snowsnakes. All of these games have been played by the aboriginal peoples for hundreds of years to help children and adults build physical and mental skills needed for hunting and survival and as part of their sense of community. The students at Glen Orchard enjoyed all of them!
