City of Kawartha Lakes students take part in local Young Musicians Showcase

The Kawartha Art Gallery’s Young Musicians Showcase took place on April 15, highlighting the vital role of music education through performances from several City of Kawartha Lakes schools.

Held at Celebrations Lindsay, this second event in the 2025-2026 series showcased talent from Lindsay Collegiate and Vocational Institute (LCVI), Mariposa Elementary School (MES), and Rolling Hills Public School. The program also featured the Kawartha Lakes Youth Concert Band, a new ensemble composed of students from throughout the region.

“This was such a great opportunity for our students who got the opportunity to show the community all the hard work they’ve put in this year, as well as their passion for music,” expressed LCVI band director, Nicholas Preiano. “Music gives students a wonderful opportunity to create and belong to something that is bigger than their individual selves. This concert is an opportunity to inspire the new generation of students and showcase how wonderful music performance can be.”

“Giving elementary school students an opportunity to perform is essential because it gives a chance for the music they have become invested in to come alive. It builds confidence, teamwork, and a sense of responsibility, while allowing students to see that their hard work matters outside of the classroom,” said MES music teacher, Beth Wilson. “When young musicians step on stage, they aren’t just playing notes. They are showing courage, using communication, and supporting one another. These experiences shape how they see themselves for years to come!”

The showcase saw a strong turnout with almost 300 local residents and families in attendance, and raised over $2,000, which will be donated to supporting the Kawartha Art Gallery and local youth music initiatives.
